From antiques and jewelry to arts and crafts and high-end furniture, Canton’s First Monday has everything a shopper’s heart desires. Taking place from December 31-January 3 and again January 28-31, this festive market is the perfect event to ring in the New Year. “The community is heavily based off of First Monday,” says Austin Melton, Visitors Bureau and Marketing Coordinator. The revenue generated by the market goes directly back into the Canton, TX community. “This lets us build infrastructures that most large cities like us don’t have. It brings in 50 percent of our taxes so it helps us keep the city together and in good shape,” he continues.
First Monday markets have an extensive history behind it, dating all the way back to the 1850’s. The market began when a circuit judge stopped in Canton on the first Monday of each month. People from the area came to town on that day to conduct their business, stock their pantries and sit in on court proceedings. During this time, many residents brought their own goods, produce and livestock with them to sell or trade, thus First Monday was born.
Now with 450 acres of space and hitting a record 7,000 vendors, First Monday has become a go-to in the town of Canton. “This is one of those once in a lifetime sort of things in which everyone should experience. There is nothing like it, especially not anywhere else in Texas,” adds Melton. For more information on the First Monday markets, please visit www.firstmondaycanton.com.
