JAS Designs, launched in 1999, wholesales jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The company sells other fashion items as well, such as handbags and apparel, when there is consumer demand for particular styles.
“Sea glass jewelry is huge right now,” Jimmie Smith, owner, shares. Necklaces, earrings and bracelets are formed from glass that consumers threw away many years ago. In the pre-recycling plant era, the glass was taken to sea and sunken on old barges. It eventually washes ashore in small, smooth pieces. The sea glass is collected and sent to Mexico, where it is wire wrapped and made into jewelry. Sea glass jewelry is available in natural blues, greens and purples.
“People are looking for the sea glass style jewelry, and it is selling well at flea markets,” Smith points out. Wholesale generally ranges from $5 to $7, with some of the necklaces wholesaling for up to $10. Markup is double to two and a half times retail.
Candy wrapper purses from Mexico are another hot trend. Hand made of recycled materials, the purses are available in five styles, including square, medium and large handbags, and a coin purse and small cell phone holder. “The multicolor is very popular,” Smith notes.
Another popular fashion item JAS Designs sells is the sarong from Indonesia. It is 100 percent rayon, and comes in tie-dye and other prints. Sarongs wholesale for $3.50 to $5 each. Many other items are trending now, Smith adds, such as patchwork bags from Nepal, and zipper and survivor bracelets.
Smith bought JAS Designs from his father, who had run a wholesale and retail business since the 1960s. Like his father before him, Smith is dedicated to keeping up with the latest fashion trends and to the quality of his merchandise. “I stand behind everything I sell. I guarantee the merchandise will be as described.”
JAS Designs has no minimum order, but shipping is free on orders over $99. The company will turn around an order in five to seven days. A rotating counter display is available.
