New Beginning for American Legion Flea Market

The American Legion Flea Market in Idabel, Oklahoma has been revitalized under new management. While the market has been open for several years, after the previous manager passed away, the number of vendors dwindled down to only a handful. “We’re trying to get it built back up so we have a pretty good sized flea market again,” says Carolyn Skelton, a vendor at the flea market. “We’ve got quite a few new people coming in just about every week, and I try really hard to push it through word of mouth.” The market sells new and used merchandise...

The Shoppes at Bowden Farms Has it All

The Shoppes at Bowden Farms opened earlier this December in Jacksonville, Florida, with 58 vendor spaces available and a very large variety of goods for sale. “We’ve actually got a 32,000 square foot building, and within that there is an antique mall, 23 specialty shops, and then the indoor flea market,” says Phil Young, general manager. “What we’re trying to do is cover every venue, basically.” In addition, the market has produce and other food vendors, a gold and silver exchange, and will soon have fresh seafood as well. After two...

Big Cypress Market Returning With New Ownership

The Big Cypress Market Place Flea Market in East Naples, FL is on track to reopen in January under new ownership, according to a report in the Marco Eagle. Closed in August of 2010 after the former owners fell behind in their payments to the bank, new owner Mark Hintz seeks to turn the facility back into more of a traditional flea market, noting that he believes the demise of the former Market Place was in part from trying to add too many extraneous destinations such as a dinner theatre, winery, atrium, and expo hall. Initially featuring more than...

Located in Brooksville, Florida, Pickers Rt. 98 Flea Market opened on November 19th and has received positive responses from both vendors and customers. According to owner Derek Moyer, there was a need for a market in the area. “The closest flea market was about 15 miles away,” he notes. “This is a good location, and I had a lot of feedback from people before I opened up, talked to a lot of vendors and they thought it was a good idea.” With room for approximately 50 tables, the market had 26 vendors selling last Saturday, welcoming about...

Mike’s Unique Road to Flea Market Success

Before deciding to open Mike’s Unique Collectible and Antique Flea Market in November 2009, owner Mike Cook had no retail experience and had never even been inside a flea market. Once he started planning for the launch, however, class was in session. “I just went around and studied flea markets around the country, and I just looked at them, taking notes about what I liked and didn’t like about them,” Cook notes. “I put a list together, and came back and talked to my partner, laid down our store, and it’s been great ever since. We’ve...

The Aqueduct Flea Market may have closed, but the AquaDuck Flea Market aims to be a worthy replacement for the legendary Queens staple. Opened on June 18th, the flea market currently has room for over 200 vendors, but will soon expand to a capacity of 350 to 400 vendors. “My business partner, Big Steve Valenti, had been working at Aqueduct for a really long time, and had a great network of other vendors that were evaluating other options,” says Dominic Ammerman, operator of the flea market. “None of the options resonated with the hardcore...

Coastal Carolina Flea Market Celebrates 30 Years

There may be a recession right now, but the Coastal Carolina Flea Market has already thrived through far bigger issues. The indoor/outdoor market has been destroyed twice, by Hurricane Hugo in September 1989 and by fire in July 1998, and rebuilt with non-combustible construction and a new sprinkler system. This summer, Coastal Carolina, located in Ladson, SC, observed its 30th anniversary, holding a celebration with live music, and the market’s three restaurants rolled back the clock by bringing back 1981 prices for the festivities. 1,000 Spaces...
