American dream: Vendor makes good, builds thriving wholesale business

About 25 years ago, Anu Sahni came to this country to make a new life. “I started in 1987 by selling at flea markets and fairs,” he recalls. “We were selling all kinds of stuff. People would ask what we sell, and we’d say, ‘Oh, this and that, all that jazz.’ ” Sahni named his business All That Jazz, and now he does a thriving trade selling wholesale blankets and clothing and more to flea market vendors like he used to be. He remembers his flea market roots very well. “We grew out of the same environment we are selling into now,”...

The Grandview Flea Market in Derry, N.H., known for its giant pink elephant, held its last session ever this past weekend, after decades in operation. “After a full day of business on Sunday, September 25, Grandview Flea Market is closing forever,” a message on the swap meet’s Web site says. “We had a great weekend. Thank you to all of you who came out to share it with us.” Joe Lore, a glass pendants vendor at the market, tells FleaMarketZone.com in an e-mail message that “the shame of it is some of the vendors at the Grandview had been...

Orange County Fairgrounds evicts 42-year-old swap meet

Last year, the cash-strapped State of California tried to sell the Orange County Fairgrounds, a move that incited public opposition, led by the Orange County Market Place, a 41-year-old swap meet with over 1,100 vendors. That effort failed. A year later, as announced in a Sept. 23 press release, the Fairgrounds Board of Directors voted to evict the longtime flea market operated by Tel Phil Enterprises. The press release says: By a 6 to 3 vote, the Board triggered Section 4 of the Second Amendment of the Lease with Tel Phil which allows either Tel...

First Monday Trade Days packs in the crowds

Recession? What recession? At the First Monday Trade Days flea market and swap meet in Canton, Texas, the crowds are bigger than ever. Shoppers are coming to the town of 5,142 people for the Christmas shopping, likely half a million of them, says Linda Hatfield, operations supervisor for the huge monthly market. “This is our busiest season,” she says. “Probably there’s not an empty motel room in a 20 or 30 mile radius for the next two months. Bed and breakfasts have been rented out for a year in advance. This is the shopping time of the...

Florida town fights new LA Vendors’ Flea Market, tries to take it over

When the Florida Department of Transportation decided to widen U.S. Highway 17-92 in the town of Lake Alfred, dividing the highway and limiting the options for driving from one side to the other, an unwitting side effect was to hurt area retailers. “Our new road construction, which has one way in and one way out, has put a damper on every business,” says Al Kitzmiller, co-owner of Sherman’s Antiques. In the aftermath, he and his business partner, Jerry Sherman, decided to start a flea market. “We had to find something to bring people back...

He was soon diagnosed with several life-threatening conditions, including cerebral palsy, tuberous sclerosis, and brain damage. Doctors did not think he would live beyond his third year. “We committed Timmy to prayer and fasting. Yes, fasting,” writes Reed, on his company Web site. “I personally knocked on every church door I could find as well as sent out hundreds of e-mails and phone calls....

Nine years ago, Jeff Dorrian was making candles and selling them at church bazaars and fall festivals. On a whim, he tried making and selling soap, and after that, his business bubbled. Now he’s “The Soap Guy.” “I had been making soap, and I didn’t have a name for my business. Customers would call and ask for ‘the soap guy,’ and that’s how I got the name,” says Dorrian. “We make premier hand made olive oil soap, and I’d say 20 percent to 30 percent of our customers use flea markets and farmer’s markets to supplement their...
