The Do’s and Don’ts of Flea Market Selling

Being a successful flea market seller takes time and is a learning experience. There are some basic Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to flea market selling. We recently took to Flea Market Zone’s twitter account to share our #FMZAdvice. Here are the most important things to remember as a vendor:

Do: Bring refreshments!
Long days braving the elements take a lot of energy and although many markets offer food, there is no guarantee it’s enough to sustain you all day. Make sure you have plenty of water and beverages as well as food to keep you awake and selling.

Don’t: Assume market traffic is all you need.
Build a following and reach more customers with social media accounts. Being online allows your loyal customers to be aware of new items, your location, special events and pricing, and it lets new shoppers find you and seek you out at a flea market.

Do: Put time into your booth presentation.
There’s only so much decoration you can do at a flea market, but make the most of it. Make sure your items are clean and displays are uncluttered so shoppers can see everything you have to offer. If you’re selling clothes, hang them up rather than laying them across tables or tarps. The little details go a long way at the market.

Don’t: Be unfriendly.
Engage with your customers and make them feel welcome. No one wants to be watched constantly while perusing, but at the same time you do not want shoppers to feel like they’re bothering you for asking the price of an item. Being friendly and capturing a customer’s attention is a sure way to make a sale.

Do: Offer multiple payment methods.
Most shoppers come with cash and it is the most convenient, but offer other payment methods. Figure out how to take credit cards with tools on your phone or online. Having advanced systems of payment will attract more shoppers and help with end of the day purchases when cash is running low.

These are just a few of the many Do’s and Don’ts we offered to our twitter followers. If you found this advice helpful or have some advice of your own, we’d love to hear from you! Join the conversation by tweeting @fleamarketzone, and using #FMZAdvice.
