Markets Celebrate Season by Giving

image of flea market food toy drivesFlea markets across the nation are pitching in for the holidays, holding toy and food drives to help those in need. To kick off the season of giving, here’s a sampling of some of the markets operating special charity programs during the coming weeks.

Treasure Island Flea in San Francisco, CA, holds a special shopping event every year to support the San Francisco Firefighters’ Toy Program to benefit local Bay Area children in need. The program is the oldest toy drive of its kind in the nation, launched in 1949. More than 300 firefighters volunteer to collect 200,000 toys to give to more than 40,000 children in need. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 24 and 25 at the Treasure Island Flea Market’s Great Lawn. More information is available by calling 415-898-0245.

In Mansfield, CT, the Mansfield Drive-in Theatre & Marketplace operates a canned food drive during the month of November. In return for donations, patrons receive free parking for the flea market. The market operates from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday through Thanksgiving. Located at 228 Stafford Road, the market may be contacted at 860-423-4441.

The Kyle Flea Market in Kyle, TX has chosen this year for its first annual holiday food drive. Donation boxes will be situated around the market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The market is located at 1119 North Old Highway 81. Information can be obtained by calling 512-295-6487.

Another special event takes place on November 18 at the Art & Flea Market in Oahu, HI. Art & Flea, GO! Mokulele, BAMP, IN4MATION and Fresh Café are teaming up with Hawaii Helping the Hungry to Have Hope (H5), collecting both food and clothing between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. The organization team has arranged for prizes to be given to the five groups or individuals who donate the most at the event. The grand prize winner will receive two inter-island airline tickets from GO! Mokulele.

The Collingwood Auction and Flea Market in Farmingdale, NJ, will run a food drive on Saturday, November 17, to benefit the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Local radio station WJKL 94.3 is slated to do a live broadcast from the market on that day to help build awareness and encourage impulse visits from passersby. The Marion Police Department in Marion, MS has hosted a toy drive each year to help needy families in the area, and this year, the Ride For A Child Toy Run Benefit will take place on November 17 at Penny’s Lil’ Flea Market, 7972 Highway 45, Marion. Santa will be present to meet and greet visiting children and a number of raffles are scheduled to entertain the adults. More information about the event is available by contacting Sgt.
