“Stolen” Renoir Finders Not Keepers

Those who had planned to bid on the infamous flea market Renoir, recently purchased at a West Virginia flea market for $7, will be sorely disappointed, as the auction house has put a hold on its sale. Washington Post reporter Ian Shapira uncovered documents connecting the piece to the Baltimore Museum of Art, which also revealed it had been supposedly stolen from the museum in 1951, according to an internal investigation conducted following Shapira’s sleuthing.
