Waterbury, VT Vendors Depend on Market

Image Waterbury Flea Market Vermont“There’s been a lot of talk recently about [Vermont] expanding the Vermont State Hospital by building a facility on a field west of Waterbury village that is currently, and has been since 1975, the site of the Waterbury Flea Market. We [Felix and Dolores Grassmann] are vendors at the flea market, and we have been setting up there for the past 11 years. In reference to the Waterbury Flea Market site, we would like to point out the following: Not only is the flea market a long-standing summer event for the Waterbury community and a go-to destination for tourists, it is also a form of income for many of the vendors.

“As some would suggest, it is not just a simple case of relocating the flea market from one spot in Waterbury to another. The flea market thrives at its current location on Route 2 because of its beautiful surroundings and its high visibility from Route 2 and Interstate 89. It is a natural draw for tourists passing through the state in the summer and fall months. To move it to another place that does not have the same visibility or accessibility to such major thoroughfares would be detrimental to the well-being and success of the market.

“Aside from the location, there is the community to consider. People depend on the flea market for different things. The vendors count on it for income. The customers count on it for another place to shop. In the wake of Irene, there are people who come to the flea market to replace the things they have lost. The flea market is also an affordable event. There is no admission fee, and you can walk around as long as you want. It’s a nice way to relax and spend time outdoors.

“While no one wants to stand in the way of people’s health needs, it would surely be easier to locate another site for a health care facility than to dislocate those who have been part of such a great pastime in Vermont.”
