Oklahoma City officials protest unfair raid on outdoor market

City council members in Oklahoma City have raised protests over alleged unequal and unfair enforcement of codes governing food trucks. According to a report in The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City Councilman Skip Kelly, one of two council members representing the district in which the health department raid took place, spoke out about the incident: “This was overreaching in one area, and it’s unfair. I’m not saying turn your head the other way on these violations. But if you can’t get two or three people to go out and work northeast...

Flea market set to open Labor Day at Calif. high school

The Santa Cruz County Flea Market in Watsonville, Calif., is moving from the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds to the Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville, Calif. As FleaMarketZone reported last year, the market had faced opposition from local protestors who objected to the market’s noise. The swap meet had been held at the fairgrounds since February 2009. Note that although one news report says the flea market is moving to the new location, another report says that the market at the fairgrounds may continue as well. FleaMarketZone has so...

Chained to flea market profits

A veteran fashion jewelry supplier is reaching out to flea market and swap meet vendors with a new product line as well as value pricing on its hallmark chains-by-the-inch product. Olympia Gold has been in the business since 1989, but longevity has not hindered innovation. “We started our own line of Katie Ko Designs,” says marketing director Terry Gibson. Old California hotel hosts a new mini-mall

A new mini-mall opened Aug. 14 in Madera, Calif., in a historic old hotel building that had hosted several failed furniture retailers. The Madera Mini Mall is host to 15 vendors selling shoes, apparel, cell phones, home décor, purses, and perfumes. There is also a photographer at the indoor flea market. The new project has been supported by the local chamber of commerce, which sponsored a ribbon-cutting. “Given this economy, we decided to try this new venue of doing the mini-mall to give small businesses the opportunity to get their feet on the...

East coast flea markets brace for Hurricane Irene

As Hurricane Irene moves forward along a path that seems likely to hit the East Coast tomorrow and this weekend, flea market managers along the shore are watching the weather and making ready. The Manahawkin Flea Market, located on the Jersey Shore, won’t be open this weekend. “We probably won’t have to evacuate. We’re four miles away from the Long Beach Island evacuation point,” says owner Warren Petrucci. “We’re just moving the garbage cans, putting all the chairs away, to clear out everything in the yard.” However, he was taking...
