Pa. plaza owner seeks vendors for his new outdoor flea market

The Mount Bethel Plaza Flea Market held a soft opening on Father’s Day and is pushing to add more vendors before a grand opening that organizers hope to schedule for the near future. The swap meet is located in Mount Bethel, Pa., just over the border from New Jersey, at a plaza owned by James Communale. “We’re doing a lot of advertising, but it’s getting the vendors in that’s the challenge. We’re offering some free coupons in the newspapers, so I hope to get more interest.” Communale says that he is patient and willing to let the market...

Fighting fleas (and mosquitoes and bedbugs and ticks and more) at the flea market

Mosquito-borne diseases kill more people worldwide than any other factor. Bedbugs feed for about 5 to 10 minutes at night, drop off of their hosts and crawl to a sheltered crevice where they’ll remain for several days while digesting the meal. Blacklegged ticks can carry the bacteria which causes Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. All bugs like these — yes, including fleas! — feast on people in the same way, by drinking blood. Dan Chapman, vice president of marketing for Discreet Patch, has an answer for all those vermin: Make...

Missouri’s Shoppers Paradise Flea Market badly damaged in fire

The Shoppers Paradise Flea Market of Farmington, Mo., was gutted in a two-alarm blaze last night, according to a report from KSDK.com.. The fire was reported at 1 a.m. on July 27. It took firefighters two hours to put out the blaze. No injuries were reported, but damage to buildings, booths, and merchandise was severe. Reached by phone, a person at the market was too busy to comment. “I’ve got four or five different fire volunteers here, and the fire marshall and everybody else,” he said. “I just can’t get into it right now.” Photo...

Pro wrestling organizer tags in as flea market’s new owner

Barnaby Jones has taken on the ownership of the Rummage Rumble Monarch Gardens Flea Market in Appleton, Wis., and he plans to rejuvenate it with lower rents, better marketing, and new events to draw shoppers. “I took it over this month, and we had our first market July 24. It is a monthly Sunday flea market,” he says. Jones was involved with the swap meet at its beginning, and was invited to take it over when the former owner’s interest waned. “Last month he cancelled it because he didn’t feel like having it. He came to me and...

N.C. county considers lifting its ban on pet sales at flea markets

The Henderson County Board of Commissioners is considering lifting a ban on pet sales at open-air markets, farmers markets, and flea markets. The ban has been in place since April 2009. The issue is contentious because animal rights activists support the ban. They want to make it harder for animal lovers to buy pets, arguing that lowering barriers to pet purchase will lead to impulse buying, buyers’ remorse, and, subsequently, abandonment and euthanasia. On the other hand, flea market supporters cast the issue as one of individual rights and...
