Fire damages softgoods at Florida flea market

A smokey fire in a merchandise storage shed disrupted Florida’s “second largest tourist attraction” yesterday, but the Florida Swap Shop in Fort Lauderdale (one of three locations in the flea market chain) was not badly damaged by the blaze. The storage unit held apparel, handbags, baggage, and other merchandise, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel. The fire began at 10:45 a.m., reports the Miami Herald, and did not require the closing of the swap meet. It did not take long to put out the fire, according to WSVN Channel 7 News....

New entertainment and retail site hosts 90-space flea market

An entertainment and retail complex called Route 30 Plex just held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week in Plainfield, Ill., according to the Plainfield Patch. The facility will host a weekly indoor flea market on Saturdays and Sundays. The inspiration for the center came after local government shot down earlier plans for an outdoor flea market at the location. The Route 30 Plex center joined the local chamber of commerce in December. The flea market will cover 7,000 square feet of space, with room for 90 vendors. According to the Web site, 28 of...

E-mart Wholesale, an online supplier of costume jewelry and accessories, is making a strong bid to attract new flea market and swap meet vendors. The company says it offers two compelling reasons. First, prices are low. “We’re probably in the top two offering the lowest prices online, period, if not the lowest,” says E-mart’s Victor Traitel. Second, the company offers customer service that is both engaging and personable. “We pride ourselves on communication with our customers,” says Traitel. He says that talking with his staff and ordering...

New Massachusetts flea market rises where another one fell

Although the Tri-Town Flea Market in Palmer, Mass., closed its doors for the last time in late October last year, a new flea market opened in the same location just six weeks later in early December. The Yankee Flea Market, under the new ownership of local businessman Keith Walker, has a fresh appearance and a new coat of paint. Walker, who also owns a fire equipment supply company near the market, has also set new hours for the consignment-style flea market following a successful first month in business, according to a posting on Craigslist. The...

Storage company starts flea market in California

In a down economy, one storage facility near San Francisco is trying a range of innovative tactics to grow business — including a monthly swap meet. Bridge Storage in Richmond, Calif., is launching the flea market on the grounds of the storage business. “Our customers who store here want to sell things,” says Laura Johnson, general manager of the facility, “and outside vendors can come and sell, too.” A trial-run flea market was held in October, which was a big success. Now, with a Feb. 19 grand opening, the swap meet will run every third...

In Florida, city council okays a new market

In Cape Coral, Fla., the city council met last night and voted 7-1 in favor of a weekly outdoor flea market to be run by the German American Social Club, a respected local not-for-profit. The club sought a variance, seeing as the market was not permitted under the Cape Coral master plan. Press coverage before the meeting cast doubt on the market’s prospects. According to club president Gerhard Veith, however, the town elders were receptive to the proposal because of the club’s local reputation. “The department that objected said that under...

As an independent supplier selling fragrance and fashion products to retailers at flea markets and swap meets, ETS Design specializes in customer service that the bigger wholesalers cannot match. According to company president Susan Liu, “Our greatest strength is the attention we give to our customers.” With small minimum orders and personal attention, the company strives to make every customer feel special. For example, Liu says that a customer really needed a shipment right away, but the UPS pick-up had already come and gone for the day, so...

Tennessee theme drives new market in a former Kmart

In another example of the trend in converting old big-box locations into swap meets and flea markets, a husband and wife team are making a Tennessee-themed market from what was once a Kmart in Memphis. “About 20 percent of our vendors will sell Tennessee-related goods, from the university items to Tennessee mailboxes to Tennessee arts and crafts,” says Dennis Stewart, the assistant manager of the Tennessee Flea Market. His wife, Denise, serves as president, and the two are putting together an ambitious retail venue. How ambitious? “We believe...

Ohio flea market founder and community leader Don Ziegler, 73, dies

Don Zeigler contracted polio in 1955, but life in a wheelchair did not stop him from helping his community and the hundreds of vendors who came to know him at the flea market he founded to support local youth. “He always put other people before himself,” his wife, June, told the Tiffin, Ohio, Advertiser-Tribune. “He was always thinking about other people. He wanted to help other people. He liked the youth. He wanted to do a lot of things for young people, to make their lives better.” Ziegler died yesterday at the age of 73. He is survived...
