El Paso moves forward to revise flea market regulations

In February this year, a flea market vendor went to the city elders of El Paso, Texas, to complain about the regulations that govern his business. The need for reform was obvious to the El Paso Legislative Review Committee, the subset of the full City Council charged with oversight for ordinances, regulations, and laws. But...

New indoor flea market fills up fast

Although her market opened less than a month ago, Penny Kennedy’s new indoor flea market in Marion, Miss., is already filled up at 15 vendors, and she has a list of sellers who are waiting to get in. A former shop owner and flea market vendor, Kennedy’s market — eponymously named “Penny’s Lil Flea Market” — will host a charity grand opening in early October, she says. “What I really want to do is make it more of a fund raiser and give the money to Hope Village for Children.” A Web site is also in the works. Explaining her inspiration...

New indoor flea market opens strong, moves into phase two

ShopSmart, a new indoor flea market that opened July 12 in Sacramento, Calif., has completed phase one of its development plan and is set to embark on phase two. Phase one included the transformation of a vacant former Sam’s Club into “ a cross between a mini-mall and an indoor marketplace,” as managing partner Matt Mertens describes it. A kids zone with jumpers and electric bumper cars, opening this week, completes the phase one development. Phase two will include the addition of space for another 50-odd booths, depending on booth size, culminating...

The market, which first opened in April of this year, will run twice a month in September, October, and November, starting Sept. 12. The vintage and crafters flea market ran on six dates in the spring, and will do so for another six days in the fall. Janet Long, an interior designer, launched the market in Ardmore, Pa., after visiting the famous Brooklyn Flea. She was inspired to create Clover Market as a place for local antique dealers, artists, and makers to...
