Florida flea market seeks rebirth with new manager

Just three weeks into his new job as manager of the Riverview Flea Market in Riverview, Fla., Richard Deardurff knows he has a big job ahead of him. The market is run down and only 20 percent full. “They just had some problem here,” he says. “They needed to get someone in who was honest and would do things the right way.” That means getting his hands dirty. “I’m personally doing a lot of painting,” he says. “We’re trying to update things in here. We’re cleaning the facility up.” Deardurff, who was formerly an owner of a consignment...

Rumored reality show to focus on flea markets

An anonymously sourced report on the buzzerblog rumor Web site says that the Game Show Network and Merv Griffin Entertainment are producing a pilot for a new flea-market-oriented contest show. The new show may be based on a somewhat similar British program. On the blog, Alex Davis writes: The show involves pairs of two who know each other going to the Rose Bowl Flea Market and buying items from a small budget given to them.  Then the team will have a small amount of time to flip the items by making them work better, look better, and so on.  The...

Paul and Linda Cahill — who currently run a jewelry design and supply company called Cornerstone Creations — got their start as flea market vendors together when they were studying to be ordained ministers. “When we were going to Bible college, we used to be in a flea market to sell our stuff,” says Linda Cahill. They started Cahill Ministries more than 30 years ago, but they have also returned to retailing as a way of funding their humanitarian efforts in 22 different countries around the world, as well as in low-income communities in the...

Former carpet dealers find new careers launching a flea market

The recent economic downturn hit Lorain County, in northern Ohio, pretty hard. Unemployment went up, construction went down, and several companies laid off workers. The Value City furniture and department store closed two years ago, and six months after that, Tomaric Drapery and Flooring shut its doors. But in those closings, the seeds for a new business were sown. Craig and Laura Brabander owned Tomaric, a 50-year-old family business. But they had to close their doors after running it for 15 years. “A lot of our business was new homes, carpeting...

The market is also getting the word out on several fronts, with a Web site, an active Facebook page (with 657 fans), a video commercial, and glowing coverage in the local paper. Over 100 vendors have signed on so far, paying $20 for a teensy...

40 vendors to be ousted as Fla. flea market closes

News reports in the Fort Meyers, Fla., News-Press and southwest Florida’s WINK-TV say that the Big Cypress Market Place will close its doors Aug. 1, 2010, putting almost 40 vendors out on the street. The upscale, indoor market featured a winery and food court. The News-Press quoted the manager, who says that business just isn’t good enough to justify staying open. “We’re definitely closing for the summer because the traffic isn’t here right now,” said Jerry McHale, receiver of the property. The WINK report was particularly stark in...

New swap meet planned west of Phoenix

A group of developers is seeking to create a swap meet on unused Arizona Department of Transportation land near the intersection of two highways just west of Phoenix, in Tolleson, Ariz. According to a report on, a Gannett Co. news site, the market would serve 200 vendors during the winter months, starting in October. The proposed Tolleson Market Place would be situated not far from a former flea market that closed earlier this year in order to make way for new on and off ramps.
