New market approved for Dodge City, Kan.

An indoor market, planned for the south side of Dodge City, Kan., was okayed at a meeting of the Ford County commissioners on June 22. “The flea market conditional use was approved,” said T. Kim Goodnight, the chair of the county commissioners. He said that the property was fine for use without improvements, in a building on site. Goodnight said that the county was “aggressive” about helping launch new ventures. “We always encourage new businesses to open up,” he said. The market is being launched by Walter Gould of Dodge City, who has...

Facing gov’t regs, Georgia flea market rebounds

This story was updated on June 30. A hostile local government forced the Statesboro Flea Market to shut its doors on Feb. 5, but after a hard battle back, owner Jo Jennings has reopened an improved market designed to satisfy the objections of Statesboro, Ga., government bureaucrats. Jennings opened the indoor market in July 2008, and by December 2009, she had made some improvements, including a partial paving of her parking lot. But the city wanted much more: full paving of the parking lot with curbs, extensive drainage from the building, a retention...

New Ariz. flea market expands before it opens

When Jeff Marriott put out the word that he was looking to open an indoor flea market in Yuma, Ariz., little did he know that he would rent out all 100-plus of his spaces in just a week and a half. “There has been an amazing response to what we are trying to do,” he says. Marriott suggests that enthusiam for the project stems from several factors. These include the seasonal influx of snowbirds; the proximity to Mexico, San Diego, and Pheoniz; and the lack of indoor mall space locally. He has also gotten noticed by the local newspaper and the...
