After a one-year break, the former farmers’ market in Telkwa, British Columbia, has gotten a new life as a combined farmers and flea market. The new Telkwa Country Green Market has a specific mission as well, according to market manager Carli Heinrichs: “It has been on hiatus for a year and is back with a new focus, ‘Educating towards changes to an eco-friendlier lifestyle, while helping local artisans sell their work.’ ”

The market opened May 15 and, for a small town in northern Canada, launched strongly on a sunny morning. “It’s been a great start,” said Heinrichs. “For our community of less than 3,000, we had five vendors, and we tallied approximately 80 to 100 people who came through the new market.”

She was especially pleased with the market’s site. “Our location has a great lawn area around a heritage church, St. Stephen’s Church, that is perfect for a new market for our community.”

Telkwa Museum Society and Eco-Crazy Quilter co-sponsor the Telkwa Country Green Market, Heinrichs said, and the new name was chosen to underscore the eco-awareness theme of the event, running weekly into September. To learn more, or to sign up as a vendor, contact Carli Heinrichs at 250-846-5985.
